Urbi et Orbi Communications has always taken “Unity” as its lodestar; and the most important form of unity is that between each human being and God. Union with our wise and loving Creator is the ultimate goal of life; in the Eastern Christian tradition, it is given a more explicit focus, and a name: Theosis.

Theosis is the process of coming into ever-closer union with God, and, indeed, ever greater likeness to God, since only this makes true union possible. Athanasius of Alexandria wrote, “He was incarnate that we might be made gods.” What would otherwise seem absurd—that fallen, sinful man may become holy as God is holy—has been made possible through Jesus Christ, who is God incarnate.
